It's All About the Stories

First, it has been waaaay to long since I have written a post. I got busy with real life and put this, thrifting for vintage goodies, and selling said goodies on the back burner. I have missed this part of my life.

 

On to the good stuff....
I was doing some pricing research on Etsy when I came across these Fantastic Vintage Folk Art Chickens listed in Sandi Olmstead's Etsy shop WimsyBooks.   While they really weren't anything like the piece I want to list, they were so familiar to me. I had forgotten until I saw them that my mother had something like this when I was a little girl. Warm and fuzzies.

I scrolled down to the product description expecting to find a sentence or two about the pieces. What I got was a wonderful story about how she and her husband took a detour and found themselves at this estate sale. The story goes on to tell how these chickens came to be made and for whom. Five paragraphs later I have a personal connection not only to the listed item, but to the seller. Take a moment to visit this lovely shop.

Archeological Dig

Ever since I was a little girl, I thought it would be fun to go on an archeological dig. Sun on my shoulders, pick and brush in my hand. Not necessarily for bones of prehistoric animals, but for household items from past societies.

It seems that I have been doing this very thing without even realizing it. My favorite past time is going to thrift stores and looking for hidden treasures. One of my favorite places to search is the local Goodwill Outlet Store. Locally it is known as "The Big Dig". This is due to the fact that you must "dig" through bins of stuff to get to the treasures.


One of the best finds I made at "The Big Dig" was about 50 vintage sewing patterns just sitting in the bin waiting for me. I love looking at clothing styles from the 70's, 60's, 50's, and beyond. How did the lifestyles of these decades influence Fashion? Color? Hair? Make-up?


Then there are the little notes written on the envelope or directions sheet. Did Grandmom sew for Grandaughter? or Did the seamstress make the clothing for herself?

One day I still would like to go on an actual archeological dig, but for now thrifting keeps me happy.

Kitschy

Some of my favorite vintage pieces are the ones that remind me of when I was a young girl in the 1970's.

When I was a little girl, I remember our house phone being "Avacado Green". The wall paper in the kitchen was burnt orange, avacado green, and brown. Mom also had a few bean mosaics hanging up on the wall.

I lived 70's kitsch.

When I saw this cheese board, I just had to have it. The colors and style reminded me so much of my mom and that kitchen.

According to the calendar, spring is here. The weatherman says it should also feel like spring today, which is good. This morning is still chilly from an overnight freeze. I'm passing time window shopping at Etsy while Mr. Sun warms the earth.

There are many darling handmade crafts and lovely fine art pieces over at Etsy, but I'm cruising through vintage items this morning.

There are some vintage that can be used to create art pieces, such as this charming shabby chic assortment of blue vintage sewing supplies and bird images. This lot comes from the shop of Estate Sale Treasures.




Then there are pieces, such as these sandals from JP Sunshine Boutique, that remind me of when I was in high school. I had a pair of sandals similar to these...they were brown, not black. I loved the sound they made as I walked down the hall to class.



These jelly jar glasses remind me of my grandma. She had so many of these glasses in the kitchen cupboard. When I was a young child I thought it was so cool to drink from them. Thank you Popism Vintage for listing these fun glasses.



Vintage is so much fun for me because so many pieces remind me of times spent with different people, usually people I don't have in my life anymore. I love the warm and fuzzy feeling I get from remembering.
I also like vintage because it is so quirky and fun. The colors and patterns from the 60's and 70's are unmatched.
There are so many reasons to like vintage housewares, clothing, jewelry, books,....etc....Why do you like vintage pieces?

This morning I listed an Avon Decanter from the 70's. When I saw it at the thrift store I knew someone could give it a loving home. Now for someone to fall in love. KoolBeanz

I was in a Treasury this week!

This past week I received a convo from a fellow Etsian, PeaseBlossom Studio. She put one of my vintage pieces (the book above) in her Treasury! That was the first time I was ever in a treasury... that I'm aware of. It was such a good feeling.

I know there is very little in my shop right now. I have many fun and interesting vintage finds that I need to list. I hope to have time (and energy) tomorrow to get some more items in my shop.

Tonight my daughters and half of my girl scout troop will be at the local movie theater selling girl scout cookies!! Unfortunately it is raining. I hope the movie goers have some sympathy for us and buy, buy, buy...!!!

Vintage Records

While digging for interesting books at the local Goodwill Clearence Center, I came across a large number of church records. They are dated between 1965 - 1983. What impresses me most is that they are in excellent condition. I have them for sale in my etsy store....
